Internal usage policy on AI

Guidelines on AI usage for the Writers and Illustrators.

We have set clear guidelines when to use AI and when not to for all the staff. We take this policy very seriously.

We believe in AI tools being only a productivity booster to our publishing work. The value proposition of this platform stems from our critical first principle thinking to the climate issues and the empathetic and rigorous approach we take to breakdown the climate concepts for our readers.

In this context we permit use of LLM models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude etc) only for preliminary secondary research, refining the title and sub-headers of the article, converting tables to graph etc but it does not substitute critical thinking and narrative development arising from the subject matter expertise of the guest writer.

Also, we take pride in collaborating with freelance illustrators for the cover images of our articles to make it humanistic and authentic for our readers. We will not use AI image generation tools for the cover images. This policy was inspired by the New Yorker's magazine's policy on only having human art on their covers.

Any form of plagiarism and copyright infringement through AI tools are strictly prohibited for the articles on this platform.

We also regularly wrestle with a complex question: What article to publish next on the platform for our readers? We weight various competing factors like what the Guest writer is itching to write, what readers are curious to know and what are the current pressing global and regional climate issues. This weighing process requires human empathy and intelligence, which we will not outsource it to AI.
